Old Church, Eastleach Martin

Painting Description

Standing beside the river Leach in Gloucestershire, U.K., this 12th century church, St. Michael and St. Martin’s, has been designated as an historical site. The village of Eastleach Martin is a joyful reminder of how small English villages used to look.

We first found this charming village in 2001 when we rented a converted granary in Shilton, a village close by. On several occasions we have returned to this village that sits on hilly ground. This bit of paradise does lack one key ingredient for placement on my list of perfect villages, a pub. Like many small villages, shops and pubs have been shuttered as the villages become bedroom satellites of larger towns.
