Where We Started

Painting Description

Bill Mathews, the proprietor of Barrons Menswear, was skeptical when Marilyn and I asked about the availability of third floor space above his store on King Street in Waterloo. The space had been vacant for a number of years so the need to clean, paint and buff was monumental. The price however was right—$40 a month. That was our first apartment. We loved it. Four years later we moved. Several years later a fire swept through that building, next to last beside the railroad tracks in uptown Waterloo. This sketch was painted in 1997 long after the building’s time.
