Westside Farm, Hallman Road, Waterloo
Painting Description
This painting shows my grandfather’s old Ford. The hill that was at the front has been flattened and covered with houses, but I’m pleased to say the old farmhouse with its bell tower still stands near the intersection of University Avenue and Fischer-Hallman Road.

COMISSION TEXT | This painting is rather emotional for me. It shows not only the house in which my grandparents lived on what is now Fischer-Hallman Road in Waterloo, but also my grandfather's old Ford. My grandfather died when I was in Grade 2 and so my sketchy memories of him are those of a child. Among the few things that I remember of him are the antics that he used to perform for us grandkids with his large magnifying glass which he used to read the paper on the kitchen table. As children we were always begging him to "make a big nose" as we viewed his face from the other side of the magnifying glass. This old farmhouse with its bell tower still stands, although it is now surrounded by many new subdivision houses near the intersection of University Avenue and Fischer-Hallman Road. The commissioner was brought up on the farm which is still owned by the family. |
