Wellington Pub, London
Painting Description
This pub with its outdoor area is conveniently located across Lancaster Place from the Courtauld Institute of Art. I decided when we visited London in 2011 to make a point of being aware of London store fronts. A pub like this is an example of a staid, but up-market, meeting place.
Over the past 40-some years I have painted many British pubs, but they were mainly in rural locations or small villages. On our 2011 visit to London, I decided that there is a wealth of subjects in London that I have barely unlocked. Using this format, I thought might help me show a slightly different view of these many worthy topics. The long format challenges me to deal with a shape that is not really familiar to me.
