Waterloo’s First School House (B)

Painting Description

When I was a young child, this old school house stood on the grounds of Central School which was the old school that made way for MacGregor School. Based on that nostalgic thought, I decided to visit the log school in Waterloo Park and do a sketch. On this warm summer afternoon, I’m standing in the park by the booth painting away at my easel when a kid about ten years old, I guess, wheels up on his bike. His first question was “What are you painting?” Since I thought the answer to be obvious, I decided to answer in a twisted sort of way. “A horse,” I said. The kid got on his bike, and over his shoulder as he rode away he said, “It doesn’t look like a horse.” Some time ago I wrote the above note to accompany a sketch of the old log school that is now in Waterloo Park. I mentioned how, when I was a child, it stood on the grounds of Central School (now MacGregor School). Some time later I received a very kind note from a gentleman who is a member of the Waterloo Historical Society. He pointed out that the log school never was located on the Central School grounds. It was located across that street in the 1800’s and then was moved to Kitchener, and following many years in Kitchener, it was relocated to its present site in Waterloo Park. I was clearly wrong. It is appropriate at this point to draw your attention to the fact that parts of what I write are absolutely true. It is just difficult to know which parts. I think that it is time to change my memory medication.
