Unloading Corn
Painting Description
This sketch shows an Old Order Amish couple unloading a wagon of corn onto a conveyor belt. This corn will end up in a silo as winter food for the cattle. Although it is not unusual to see an Amish woman working with crops, it is almost certain that no Mennonite woman would be doing what the Mennonites consider men’s work. Each group of conservative people has their own do’s and don’ts that are difficult for non-members to understand. Tradition plays a major part in these morays.
