Tower Above the Grand

Painting Description

This view of the historic Pioneer Tower is seen from the bank of the river just below the Homer Watson House. How well I remember climbing up the shaky wooden stairs of this memorial tower as a child. Although I was frightened because the stairs were wiggly, possibly they were made even more unstable by my two older brothers. The hollow sounds within this silo-like structure still are very clear in my memory. My family visited this site several times a year because the tower was close to the Pioneer Barbeque, which was a haunt of ours. Unfortunately we paid more attention to the view from the top than we did to the memorial stones of the early settlers which stand at the base of this historic and romantic symbol of Waterloo County. Because I was honourary chairman of the Grand Valley Foundation for so long, I have travelled this length of the river. What a beautiful ribbon of scenery.
