Through the Ford
Painting Description
To me each painting starts from a single impression or view. The ford that caught my eye was in Brockhampton, a small village at the edge of the New Forest, a nature preserve just off the English Channel near Southampton. From that watery spark, I added two houses from the same village, and one, the thatched cottage, comes from up the Thames, west of London. The Canadian Carriage Classic, a horse show held annually near Orangeville, Ontario provided me with the pretty, yellow-wheeled gig that I have placed in the ford. In the foreground, I included a garden and wall from a great house, Knole, in the southeast of England. The people in this painting emerge from my files of photos that I have grown over the years. By this point, my U.K. files have swelled to several thousand. As with the rest of my photos, these images are all sorted by subject and location.
