Sussex Church

Painting Description

This country church is near a Roman ruin that we reached along this broad laneway. The remains of the Roman house from 55 B.C. staggered our imagination, as the bits and pieces of the floor with its dazzling design, as well as a lower heating portion, were able to establish in our minds the whole framework of the house. Roman ruins are relatively common in Sussex and Kent and often draw little interest. Visible in the background of this watercolour-style painting are the South Downs, a large moraine that runs across the south of Sussex.
