Sunday Before Christmas

Painting Description

I was intrigued by the play of the red snow fence against the cool blue of the snow. The warmth is echoed also in the slow moving vehicle sign as well as subtly in the road. The vision of the black rope of buggies along this road north of St. Jacob’s is always pleasing for me, no matter how often I witness this Sunday ritual. I have attended a Sunday service in a church just as this, and I can tell you that the parade into the meetinghouse grounds is only a start to the service in those pale pine pews blackened by Sunday’s best clothing.
