Painting Description

The task of haying is an unrelenting one when the weather is good. In this day, I realize “make hay while the sun shines” means little. To the traditional Mennonite farmer who must handle every bit of hay, this is a time of stress but also a time of joy as he harvests a crop that will feed his animals through the winter. This idyllic setting stretching off into the distance provides a counterpoint to the serious business at hand.

I had started this painting 15 years ago and through carelessness I lost it. Only when I was sorting out all the things from the closing of the gallery in January 2010 did I come across this piece titled Unloaded Wagon and decided to finish it.
