Repairing the Stone Wall (Cotswolds)

Painting Description

A British art dealer once described my work to me as contemporary genre, and I suppose that it is. I do delight in painting people doing the everyday things. My work of the Mennonites is that. I sometimes get into trouble when I attempt to photograph a workman going about his usual task. I am questioned rather closely as to why I would be interested. Over the years I have developed an approach to justify my picture taking. I say, “My brother-in-law is a carpenter (or taxi driver or whatever) and I just wanted to show him what a real carpenter looks like.” It’s a lie of course but the workman often seems very pleased to be a good example.
