Red Mittens
Painting Description
This little girl in her outsized gear is an obvious subject. As one of a family of eight girls, there is no shortage of garments waiting for this sweet growing child. She represents the two sides of the Mennonite/Amish culture. On one hand, she shows the conservative, dour, practical side of the idea. The dark coat and kerchief along with the dark skirt and rubber boots demonstrate the practical and sober side. The pink apron and the red mitts show the “joie de vivre” that is so common and so strong among the plain people.
