Rainy Day, Sissinghurst
Painting Description
On this rainy, early April day, the view from the end of the garden is almost a springtime monochrome. An almost colourless painting like this presents a challenge because of the subtlety of hue, but it also displays a beautiful softness as the landscape retreats into the distance. For me as an artist, a painting like this is very demanding, as control of the tones is essential. Off to the right runs a long pond shown only in the corner of this view. At the other end of the pond is the writing room built by Nigel Nicolson just after his father’s death.
