Push of Progress
Painting Description
The symbolism is quite apparent in this painting. The old-fashioned small carriage is being pushed out of the way by the massive and modern. The Belgian city of Bruges seems to handle this dichotomy very calmly; however, the medieval city has not made too many concessions to change. Like Venice, this town has deliberately maintained street rules on architecture and transportation. No giant highway slices through the ancient houses ranked beside the canals. Old streets that corkscrew into the main town square, or to the market square, are not bothered by the efficient delivery of people to their destinations. The church towers can be glimpsed singularly or in pairs as a sudden twist in a street reveals new views for the pedestrian alert enough to be surprised. The heart of this old city beats slowly but strongly and suggests good health and long life.
