Portrait Study (Man)

Painting Description

Gatherings of Mennonites, such as barn raisings, are a chance to observe my people out of their everyday settings. This fellow is the head man at the barn raising, and you can see the concentration on his face as he orchestrates the barn’s construction. A dealer in lumber and timbers mainly used, during the rest of the year he is a farmer and awning maker as well. He is the man in his group that assesses derelict buildings to see if those wooden structures contain valuable components for the next barn construction. His formal education does not extend beyond Grade Eight in a one-roomed school, but his knowledge is ever increasing. He is one smart guy.
