Ploughing the Garden
Painting Description
The stone house with its multiple additions is actually located on the West River Road only three miles from the famous West Montrose Covered Bridge. Using different materials, each generation has added its contribution to the present shape of that multi-generational building. The two women in the middle distance on the right side I spied in a garden near Hawkesville. Their warm dress contrasts sharply with the young man with rolled up sleeves on the plough. I discovered this fellow near Linwood. He has figured in a number of my paintings since I first got to know his parents when he was just a tyke. Since I did this painting in 1990, he has gotten married and has a baby and so the cycle starts again. Set near the hills at Hawkesville, this painting demonstrates a colourful yet subtle combining of colours in quite a dramatic fashion in the grass and weeds of the foreground strip of land.
