Old Helper
Painting Description
Although Sheaves Tower was once a helper, a provider of extra power to the mill across the road in Blair, this old building now serves no purpose other than posing for artists. I chose to paint this strange vertical structure the way it was in the 1980s before it was reconstructed and “improved”. I don’t mean to sound catty, but I am bothered by the way historical buildings are redone, sanded and painted within an inch of their lives. Restorers would probably say that this renewing approach is necessary to preserve the fabric of these old duffers. Sadly, I think that we often end up with mutton dressed as lamb.
