Old French Church, Waterford, Ireland
Painting Description
One of the stops on an around the U.K. cruise that we took was Waterford, Ireland. This painting, done on site in a busy lane, shows the remains of a once grand edifice. Ironically, while painting this piece, I experienced a charming but yet sobering episode. A workman carrying a heavy box of tools stopped for a few minutes to watch me paint. “Oh, it must be grand to be able to stand in this wee lane and make a picture”. I agreed that it was, but said that I was getting a bit old to deal with all the traffic as I paint. “Yes,” said he, “you go to bed young and fit one night, and you wake up old and spent”. At least, I thought, for this old church the process of decay was much more delayed.
