Next Winter’s Food
Painting Description
The Mennonite idea of self sufficiency certainly saves money but costs labour. In this small painting, I have endeavoured to stretch the time-frame to show that these horses are doing summer work for winter meals. Note as well in the background, the greenhouse used to start garden plants before the season is hospitable for planting. In modern society we are heavily committed to instant results which are much different from the slow, steady, plan-ahead approach of traditional rural life. This painting was inspired by a Mennonite farm near Red Hill which is a crossroads northwest of Hawkesville. If you feel inclined to visit Red Hill, look for a red schoolhouse because that is all that you will find with this name.
