Mules, Panama Canal

Painting Description

I have transited the Panama Canal twice, although on the second occasion our ship simply turned around in the large lake between the two sets of locks. These electric locomotives draw the ship through the locks. The ship is not under its own power and is totally controlled from an elevated booth beside the locks. From the time that the canal was built, these powerful compact engines have drawn the ships so the name “mules” refers to the practice years ago of having mules or horses to draw barges through canals.
