Last Day of Sugaring

Painting Description

The pails wait to be removed from the maple trees. The snow has gone, revealing a carpet of dead leaves. The sugaring season is over.

I was first attracted to the old milk cooler standing on a platform beside the sugar shanty. As a teenager I helped move many coolers like this from one farm to another as herds grew and more capacity was needed. As often happens, the first point of interest takes a back seat as I see much more in the scene. Now I am struck by the quiet colour palette and the peaceful feeling.
