Jubilee Crowds

Painting Description

The temporary barricades erected along the Mall for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in London served as a display rack for many in the crowd of well over 500,000 people. Excited, but well behaved, the observers in the front row chat with the policemen who were stationed at thirty-foot intervals along that eight-lane thoroughfare. Occasionally the Bobbies would consult a small file of photos that they carried. They clearly were on the alert for troublemakers after the tragedy in New York the previous September.
