Hawkesville Portrait

Painting Description

The broad brimmed hat and the collarless jacket of this farmer are indicators that he is from the Old Order Mennonite group. His plaid shirt, which by Mennonite standards is rather showy, suggests to me that he is on the progressive edge of a quite conservative group. I have painted this man against the barred window of the stable door.
