Greenhouse
Painting Description
A truck stands by the greenhouse. A buggy with a white horse waits at the hitching rail near the woodpile.
A visit to this Mennonite-run greenhouse this spring to buy some flowers turned out to be a bit embarrassing. I commented to the young woman who sold me the flowers on the major alterations happening on the next farm. We agreed that we both preferred the former version which was much more traditional. When I mentioned that all these changes in the area reminded me of the modernizing in Mennonite country in Pennsylvania, she said shyly that she had never been to Pennsylvania. “Perhaps you should consider going there as it would be a good place to find a husband,” I ventured. Once again the shy smile, “I think it is a little soon for that. I have just turned sixteen.” I was embarrassed and she was amused.
