Gathered

Painting Description

On a muddy spring day, I found these buggies parked at a Mennonite farm west of Linwood.

After almost 50 years of patrolling Mennonite country, I would like to think that I can read the situations that I see on Mennonite farms, but this gathering of buggies has me stumped. Normally a group of vehicles parked in the barnyard indicates a work crew, building a barn or carrying out some sort of task that calls for many hands. On this day, when I put down the window of my car, I heard no sounds of work. Could this have been a meeting of the church council? Perhaps someone was desperately ill and relatives have gathered. I will never know the meaning of this gathering on a quiet spring morning.
