Garden Gnome
Painting Description
This little fellow sits in the garden of a friend of ours. Her garden has been influential in my approach to garden painting. As you can see, this gardener, Nora, favours a British style of perennial garden where all kinds of blooms are chucked in cheek by jowl. It seems to me the combinations of these many colours and shapes create an energy that a bed of a single species could never match. Once again, this is an example of letting a small patch of flowerbed create a design that I only need to discover. As I get older, I become acutely aware of how many paintings are waiting to be discovered. I just look a bit.
