Garden Door, Bateman’s

Painting Description

Bateman’s was the home of Rudyard Kipling. In contrast to many well-known figures such as Sir Walter Scott who owned imposing mansions, Kipling’s place is rather modest by North American standards. Bateman’s is substantial but not showy, rather like the man himself who resembled an old time clerk with his wire-rimmed glasses and his bald head.
