Five Horse Hitch (A)
Painting Description
In this painting the farmer is harrowing the field prior to putting in seed, quite probably winter wheat. By this point the plowing and discing are already finished. In the spring the green shoots will appear as if by magic. The five horse team moves slowly through the fields on this rolling farm not far from Crosshill. All the horses work together to pull the iron implement, except the horse on the right who does not seem to be doing his share of the pulling. No doubt in short order, the farmer will bring this slackness to the horse’s attention. I realized that it often appears that the horses are working on their own, rather like autopilot, but the teamster must always be in control.
