Corfe Castle, Dorset
Painting Description
As we left the parking lot on the far side of the village with a line of other tourists, the castle or what’s left of it stood proudly on the hill to the east. It is easy to see why such a commanding position was chosen and when one thinks that the castle is in the middle of the Isle of Purbeck, its strength is obvious. This Dorset landmark, once regarded as the most important in England, is owned now by the National Trust. Restoration has been continuous for over twenty years. Not really surprising for a hugh fortification started in the 11th century by William the Conqueror as one of the first castles built of stone rather than earth and timber.
