Clearing the Mower (Study)

Painting Description

I started this painting as a landscape with the activitiy of the guy untangling the mower. As I went along, I decided that this man and team were getting lost in the landscape. As I don’t start a painting with a fully formed final version in my head, I sometimes decide midway that the painting wants to go in a different direction.

At the risk of sounding too Zen, the painting seems to take on a life of its own and steers me in an unexpected direction. When I was younger I used to fight this urge to veer off onto an unexpected path but as I grew older I decided to accept the good fortune that came my way which certainly makes for a much more exciting creative experience. I can’t wait to see a painting finished because I want to find out what it looks like.
