Chatsworth Border
Painting Description
The perennial boarders at the great houses in England are so long and so broad it is hard to realize their actual scale. Although I was very taken by the gardens at Chatsworth, and of course the house itself, one of the highlights is a painting by John Singer Sargent that hangs in one of the reception rooms. The counterpoint of the sumptuous interiors and the handsome exteriors of buildings of that type dazzles me. Can you imagine that the Devonshires own seven properties of that scale?
