Carriage Ride
Painting Description
I was twenty-seven years old when I painted this horse and carriage piece. All the visual devices, such as the crescent road, the draped shadow and the passive patterned sky are ideas that I still enjoy over thirty years later. When I look at this piece, I see the foundation of what my work has become. Now I would treat this subject in a much different manner. I would include some farm buildings and possibly some farm animals or traffic on the highway. I’m not sure that a new version would be a better painting but just a different approach. As you can see, I am having trouble not repainting this charmingly simple piece in my mind.
