Blacksmith
Painting Description
As a young man just starting to pursue the Mennonite life topic, I found that the St. Jacobs blacksmith shop offered good opportunities to meet Mennonite farmers. Looking back on that time now, I’m sure that the blacksmith, Jon Martin, must have thought me a strange bird. At that time few town people showed the slightest interest in the rural lifestyle of Mennonite farmers. Perhaps my rural family background coupled with my interest in horses spurred me on. By the time that I exhibited this painting at Ontario House in London, England in 1979, the interest level was quite strong,
