Autumn Cleaning
Painting Description
The Old Order Mennonite church is short on ecclesiastical events. Communion is only a twice yearly affair, but the week before those days, once in the Spring and once in the Autumn, the church is thoroughly cleaned. The unpainted wooden benches are taken outside from their bleacher-like arrangement to be washed, while the interior of the church is also scrubbed. There is a temptation to view this house cleaning in a symbolic way, but I”m not sure that idea is really part of what is just a complete wash-down of church interior and its benches.
