At the Kennels
Painting Description
“At the Kennels” is just one of a group of five paintings created for a member of a private shooting club on Griffith Island in Georgian Bay, thirty miles from Owen Sound. A short ride by launch brought us to this island, formerly owned by General Motors. A modest hotel, along with the necessary outbuildings for the maintenance of a small village, crouches along a harbour. Birds are raised in captivity for later hunting purposes. Kennels are maintained and dogs trained for field shooting. A staff of handlers, birders, and hotel people live on this island year round. There is even a small eviscerating plant to handle the day’s shoot, preparing them flash frozen for the hunters.
