Beehive Golden Corn Syrup was a feature of my childhood so when the St. Lawrence Starch Company, which produced that sweet confection, approached me to paint an anniversary piece, I was very excited. In almost all commissions, I am led into areas about which I know little and so with this one. I learned that during World War II, St. Lawrence Starch Company maintained a huge rink on company land for the enjoyment of the whole town of Port Credit. Using old photos and movies, I was able to re-create this nostalgic scene. Over the years I have come to realize how important it is to have strong visual information. My historic paintings rely very strongly on archival material and I have learned to appreciate the great services that most Archives provide to the public.
