Sissinghurst Area Oasts

Painting Description

In Kent, the garden of England, hops are still a major crop. After so many years, the oast houses, those buildings used to dry hops for the beer-making process are virtually imbedded on the landscape. Groups of English oaks have grown up around the red brick buildings with their conical roofs that swing to catch the prevailing winds. As modern methods take hold, many oasts have been turned into houses. This particular view presented itself every day as we drove from our 15th Century row house in 1998.
