Painting Description

Although well known for my paintings of rural life in the Waterloo area, I journeyed to British Columbia to find this proud poser. We spent a few days at a quiet hotel “Hastings House” on Saltspring Island. This is the island near Vancouver that is the home of Bob Bateman, the famous wildlife artist. This small hostelry was a rustic and eccentric establishment that was home to a large collection of birds. Some were penned, but many had the run of the yard. This fellow with his haughty bearing walked into a bright sunlit bit of lawn and presented an irresistible idea to me. I have no idea how I choose my subject. I simply act instinctively to what I see. My response comes from my personality and my experience and makes that painting music. This elegant bird striding across the grass brings to my mind the paintings of farmyard animals once so popular in Victorian England.
