Portrait in a Sugarbush

Painting Description

Using watercolour and pencil crayons, I painted a character study in combination with a landscape. It seemed to me appropriate to place this figure in this setting. I didn’t feel that placing a Mennonite farmer in a formal portrait would be sympathetic. Just a note: the man pictured here was part of a splinter group of Mennonites that wear beards. All other Mennonites are clean shaven. Since 1990, almost all of this group have left Waterloo County for farms around Gorrie, Ontario.
