Opening Night, Drayton

Painting Description

Over the last years, I have greatly enjoyed the “new” theatre at Drayton. It was, however, built just after the turn of the century and served as a town hall, meeting hall, and opera hall. While prowling through some old records, my research person, Joan, discovered that gaslight was the first source of light in that building. Using that piece of trivia, I constructed, with the aid of some old photos, this opening night as it could have been many years ago. I often find paintings develop in my mind from a chance spark whether visual or factual.
