Little Amish Farmhouse

Painting Description

I am greatly attracted to the personal colour schemes that are evident in the Amish farmstead. Much more than the Mennonites, the Amish love bright colourful combinations that seem strange to the conservative taste. This same love of colour shows in the workday clothes of the Old Order Amish, which contrast sharply with the much more restrained hues of their Sunday best. This design painted in 1977 in watercolour and ink describes a small house that is now surrounded by giant modern barns. This house is on the edge of “Amish Country”, two concessions west of the north-south highway that bisects Linwood.
