Grandpa in the Garden

Painting Description

I saw this old man, Ivan Bowman’s father, putting straw and manure on the garden at his home in the Crosshill/Linwood area. I had talked to him a number of times before but in this chat, I mentioned that I lived on Marshall Street in Waterloo. He became quite excited and told me that as a young man, before he was married, he had lived on that same street. Just after the turn of the Twentieth Century it was common for Old Order Mennonite young men to work in the furniture industry in “the city” as he called it. He was pleased and so was I.
