Church Gate at Kingham

Painting Description

I was intrigued by the fanciful iron gate at the church at Kingham, Oxfordshire. The flowers added a lovely decoration.

This pretty church of St. Andrew in Kingham, Oxfordshire, had a little used gate on the side of the churchyard that gave on to a football pitch. The sprays of white flowers decorating the clearly personal iron gate with the year of 1935 built right in added to the appeal of this sight. What, I wonder, happened in 1935?

Editor’s Note:

The Jubilee Gate was erected in 1935 between the graveyard and the adjacent field to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the reign of King George V.

The Editor’s Note is from a St. Andrew’s Church, Kingham, Oxfordshire pamphlet, written in 1962 by E.J. Lainchbury, Jnr., Churchwarden, and updated in 2004 by the Vicar, the Rev. Tony Cannon and Rev. Ralph Mann.
