Church Cottage, Shilton, Cotswolds

Painting Description

The name of this building tells of its location, not of its ownership. If it were owned by the church but was not the manse, it would in all likelihood be called The Grange. The naming of houses is quite common in England, and in most cases does reveal something about a building’s history, such as The Old Forge. Some names speak to location in the village, such as this church cottage, or of siting, such as Canal House. Many names are used over and over again. The Manor and Rose Cottage are two such examples. On one visit to Kent, we had a sign made for my brother Doug’s house— Willow Cottage— just six doors down Willow Street from our gallery.
