Bruges Lace Makers

Painting Description

A long pleasant walk from the well-preserved medieval centre of Bruges, Belgium brought us to a neighbourhood of two-story, rural-style buildings. In this quarter, the workingman’s area, we located the lace-making museum. In a classroom-sized space, rows of older women hunched over baize covered boards, wielding the wooden bobbins used in making lace. The room was quiet with concentration, as these women produced traditional lace patterns with an intensity that grannies of that age more often reserve for Bingo.
