Before Sunday Lunch

Painting Description

The Mennonite meetinghouse is the most dramatic setting of the quiet life of the plain people. I have never met a person who does not marvel at the scene of a hundred horse-drawn vehicles clustered around a white clapboard church.

This painting falls strongly into the tradition of ‘Gathering at the Meetinghouse’. Since the services revolve among the various churches, some people drive by horse several miles to church. Following the service, these people are invited home by friends or relatives for a massive meal and fellowship.
