Steep Street, St. John’s, Newfoundland

Painting Description

For me, one of the joys of travelling is the new images that present themselves as I just go about doing whatever it is I”m doing in whatever town I”m in. The steepness of the hills in St. John’s certainly presents a whole bunch of new visual images. There is also to me a certain kind of toy-like quality to these little row houses stacked almost straight going up the side of this very steep street, one block away from Hotel Newfoundland. These small houses were built in the 1890’s by a ship’s captain–one for each of his daughters.
