Spring Airing

Painting Description

This painting was inspired by the comparison in my mind between this Mennonite lady airing her quilts with the airing of bedding that is so common in Germany. In Germany, window sills and balconies are used for this purpose. In many ways I have thought of how closely the conservative Mennonites parallel the European rural people. I suppose this should not be surprising given the Mennonite roots in Switzerland and other areas of Europe. Beyond the activity, I was drawn to this scene by the patterns of the quilts, mats, and afghans in contrast to the unyielding rhythm of the picket fence.
