Painting Description

In preparation for a trip to Paris I spent some time reading up on Montmartre, a village on a hill near Paris where many artists lived because it was cheap. Next to a gypsum mine, this small humble village, which is now a part of Paris, lives in people’s memories attached to names like Toulouse Lautrec and even Picasso, although he left the village because he said there was too much partying going on and not enough painting. I composed this view from archival photos from the 1800s, trying to convey the broken-down feeling of this now famous spot.
